Stay Safe in an Emergency By Always Carrying These Items

By Andy Baker

You have probably been in a situation where you needed something and you simply could not find what you needed. It may have been a flashlight, or a small knife blade or even a screwdriver. You may have even needed personal protection at some point. However, to carry everything you may think you need would be burdensome, but you can begin to carry very common yet useful everyday items for a variety of tasks including tools and materials if you find yourself in a survival situation.

You do not want to carry an extra briefcase or purse so any items you carry must fit in your pockets, clip on your belt or even can be worn around your neck. Neck chains can be a choke hazard so ensure the chain is designed to break away when worn around the neck. Wearing a quality belt is important not only to attach items to but also the belt can be used for other things as well such as an emergency tourniquet.

A quality knife is considered one of the most essential survival items, and in particular a knife that has multiple tools attached. You never know when you may need a pair of pliers or scissors or even a small file. The knife can be carried in a purse, pocket or in a sheath clipped to your belt.

Rope/cordage/string, whatever name you use it is invaluable in a survival situation and the easiest way to carry rope is by wearing a paracord survival bracelet. You can use to make emergency repairs to clothing and gear if you have a punch blade on a multi-tool knife. If you use 550 paracord, it can be unraveled to make smaller strands for clothing repair or even emergency fishing line.

Having the means to start a fire can save your life. You may need to signal emergency responders or need a fire for warmth if your car breaks down in the wintertime along a deserted stretch of road. Magnesium sticks along with flint sticks or rods can be used to ignite tinder in practically any situation.

Paperclips come in a variety of sizes from small thins ones to heavy larger ones. Carry an assortment on your key chain or on a neck chain. Small ones can be used as emergency sewing needles and fishhooks, while larger ones can be sharpened and shaped into fishhooks or even used for emergency wound closure.

Consider a cell phone as an emergency survival tool. Ones that have GPS tracking enabled can be used to find you if you become lost, stranded, or otherwise need rescuing. You can also use many cell phones as a GPS device to find your way home if you become lost in the wilderness.

Consider personal protection as one of your everyday carry items. Protection includes pepper spray, stun guns and even firearms in some cases. You can clip pepper spray on a belt or even carry some especially designed canisters around your neck or on a key chain.
