The State of Arizona's August 2012 Unemployment Rate at 8.3%

The unemployment rate for the State of Arizona's for August 2012 was static at 8.3%. In August, there were around 250,000 unemployed individuals in AZ. This is an increase of only 900 people over the previous month. Additionally, the number of employed in Arizona went down by around 3,300 individuals to about 2.75 million. This number, however, was mainly offset by a subsequent fall of 2,400 in the total workforce for the month. Together, these numbers result in the static August unemployment rate.

A year ago in August 2011 the unemployment rate in Arizona was at 9.5%. The effect of the large rate reduction over the past year was roughly 37,500 fewer unemployed workers in Arizona. Also, there are around 19,000 more people employed in the state from 2011 to 2012. Also, while the recent pattern for many states in the country has been higher recently, Arizona's unemployment rate has mostly dropped for all of 2012 (with just a few exceptions). In comparison to the national average Arizona's August 8.3% rate is just moderately (0.2%) higher than the U.S. average.

The industry employment statistics for Arizona in August are generally negative. Down for the month were Mining & Logging, Construction, Manufacturing, Education & Health Services, Leisure & Hospitality, and Government. A handful of industries, however, did see employment gains. These included Trade Transportation & Utilities, Financial Activities, and Professional & Business Services. The business sector with the greatest percentage gain in the state during the past year was Construction (up 6.7%). The industry with the biggest drop in employment during that timeframe was Other Services (down 1.8%). The business sector with the most employed continues to be Trade Transportation and Utilities with about 485,400.

If we look at Arizona compared to other States in the vicinityin August 2012, the state's unemployment rate is in the middle. States with higher unemployment rates than Arizona include California (10.6%) and Nevada (12.1%). State's with lower rates that Arizona in August include Colorado (8.2%), New Mexico (6.5%), Utah (5.8%), and Wyoming (5.7%).

In a few weeks the employment statistics for Arizona for September 2012 will be reported. When they are we'll review the statistics and look at the trends for the State. Please understand that previously released employment statistics may be modified sometime in the future.
