By Kerry Ross

Being a doctor is almost synonymous as knowledge and success. Indeed, most if not all people look up to them and dream to be wearing that white coat themselves someday. There is no denying that doctors are well trained professionals and are expected to be the problem solvers instead of help seekers. But just like common people, doctors have their own frustrations in life and even in their careers. Physician coaching is a great way to provide an outlet for them and most importantly make necessary improvements with their lives.

There have been numerous reactions toward such practice. To some it is as helpful as it guaranteed them to be, however to others this may be hard to accept that a successful doctor such as him or her, will rely to someone and help him or her to face their challenges in life. Doctors are trained to handle broken bones, comas, febrile convulsions and so on, but they were never trained on how to face challenges that normal human beings have.

Ironically though, doctors were believed to be in the leadership roles. These skills needed to be taught, learned and practiced. The lack of knowledge and skills on such area may result to more conflict and less efficient work and personal relationship. Coaching is about guiding or assisting a doctor to see the issues and things in front of them which they were not aware before.

Projecting fears, worries and helplessness at all times can result to an unhealthy relationships to oneself, other people and with work. For such instances as well, a doctor may start to be unsatisfied with his work and life in general, and that makes a great impact towards one's performance at work and his personal relationships too.

Although medical doctors are successful with their careers, most often than not, their personal life and relationships could be in strain. For example, if one is doctor that seems to take good care of his or her patients but not to himself, or if you realized there's not enough time to do things that really matters to you, then such practice could be very helpful.

Keep in mind that such activity is far from psychotherapy. Psychotherapy focuses on psychopathology, its signs and symptoms, making diagnoses and implementing therapy. On the other hand, this activity focuses on exploring unfulfilled dreams, challenges that a client is having and life balance in general.

It looks at life, unfulfilled dreams, balance and challenges the medical doctors to reach their goals. Sometimes, this practice may rekindle the doctors' joy for medicine as sessions may be able to renew their passion towards their profession. More so, it provokes reflection as well as reevaluation of one's assumptions.

More so, this activity involves asking questions which could provoke re-evaluation and reflection of your assumptions, exploring feelings to be able to address your procrastination, ambivalence and hesitation as well as fixing what was broken. It's about making mutual agreement, making changes and making things happen.

Medicine is a life time learning process. Physician coaching can help you face and fight those challenges you have for your profession and with your personal life. There's a vast opportunities that one can actually get out from such activity, being a better doctor is only the beginning.
