When I'm "Stupid" About My Meds

By B. Gregory Sloan

When my lovely bride and I were going through the portion of life in which we were bringing up young, impressionable children, our 3 weren't allowed to utter the major "S" word. Nope, the big "S" word simply wasn't allowed in our home. Our children were not allowed to call each other or anybody else-"stupid." Yeah, you might just feel that there are a lot of additional types of words that need to be disallowed in a household ahead of that one, and there actually were, but "stupid" was definitely one that was not tolerated.

That's one reason that I got to thinking about that word in regards to my own life and discipline practices a a week or so ago. At 54, there are actually several prescribed medicines that I take when I need them. That being said, the very most important one, the medication that I am actually required to take daily, is the one in which I am the most inclined to overlook. The medication is called Amlodipine, which is quite commonly recommended for hypertension(high blood pressure).

Here's the deal. My level of high blood pressure is not exceptionally high, or in the typical "danger zone," however, for the "Silent Killer' that we know high blood pressure to be, it's nothing except "stupid" for a guy like me not to place an extremely high priority on swallowing that tiny capsule to ensure that my blood pressure levels remain at a safe level. High blood pressure can easily be the cause of numerous terrible things, including stroke, heart attack, and much more. We simply can't play around with it.

So, exactly why am I more likely to overlook my blood pressure meds than the other meds? Well, it's because those high BP symptoms aren't normally crying out for attention. I have a small disc problem in my lower back for which I take medication, and when it acts up, it certainly lets me know. But, this is not necessarily so with my blood pressure. It's a sneaky rascal. With many ailments, the warning signs are certainly going to scream to you that it's time for your meds. But nope, my high blood pressure doesn't pull on my coat sleeve and give me a reminder.

So, duh ... stupid me. Why don't I put a reminder on my iPhone or something similar that I would do for various other critical responsibilities? That way I will likely not forget that extremely important capsule. It just ain't that difficult! However, it's really important.

So, okay, I still expect that my kids never call one another stupid. However, this is one occasion in which I think their daddy has pretty well drifted into that category on occasion. High blood pressure is dangerous. Let's follow our physicians' directions and do the deal. Let's save our lives.
