Advertising has been around for as long as anyone can remember. In order to sell products or show people about an event you need to talk about it. Vintage advertising signs were one of the most important starts to this industry.
In the 1960s very colorful and whimsical signs were popular. People at the time wanted lots of colors. While if you look at the 1980s basic colors with a few splashes of neon was popular. Also the photos were pretty realistic, nothing too crazy. This shows us that everything was based on the time period. The purpose of the adverts is to get peoples attention and if it can do this, then its purpose was fulfilled.
Back around the 17th century a law was enacted that stopped anything from being hung. Since advertisements had gotten so loud and giant over the years, they were having a problem with them falling off of buildings. This meant that the people walking below had the possibility of being hit and crushed with them. A while after this law was created, they changed it. It was decided things could be hung, but they must be held tightly to the side of a building or wall.
The light bulb was a wonderful thing brought to us around the 19th century. This gave the ability to view these masterpieces in the night or day. Stores may have been spending more to get the bulb, but with all the extra advertising time, it made it well worth it.
Neon tubes were also a great idea thought up in the 20th century. They were a common item used at this time. The first one was seen and used in 1921. These tubes are usually seen in bigger cities and are a wonderful sight during the night life.
When the use of metal and tin were eliminated during the times of war, companies had to find another product to use. This is how plastic became the new in material. Manufacturers were able to get over the limitations and use this new item. It was fairly cheap and very dependable, perfect for what they needed.
Some plastics were still more expensive than neon around the 1950s. This did not stop manufactures from choosing plastic. It was simpler to make and did not require other contracts outside of their own company. This meant they could make more of it more rapidly. The price may have been slightly more, but the convenience made up for that. Having a higher production of signs, means filling more orders, which makes up for the slightly higher material cost.
During the war tin and metal were marked unusable except for war efforts. This made companies switch to plastic. Before this there had been many neon signs as well as ones with light bulbs. When plastic became the new in material everything changed. Vintage advertising signs have changed much over the years, although one thing will always remain the same, without all the advances our society would not be anywhere near what it is now.
