Learning About Concrete Color Pigment

By Sally Delacruz

Concreted surfaces can be more than just floors these days. Versatility with coloring, texturing, and installation provides more options. People can choose this material for counter tops, table tops, bar tops, and even as a non-traditional flooring. Concrete color pigment helps with choices, but it is important to understand the proper use and types.

Pigments are available in powder or liquid forms. They can be mixed into cement before it is installed or they can be applied to the surface as penetrating colors. There will be different requirements for mixing. Liquids, for example, may need to be diluted depending on whether they are already diluted or concentrated. The pigments may also have differences in how they should be applied.

The most common types of pigments are iron oxide versions. Out of the three main groups of pigments, these ones are the least expensive, often because they have limited colors and more detailed or difficult application instructions. They have very few colors to choose, but they are ideal if you are looking for earth tones in the brown and dark yellow range.

Metal oxides are a bit more expensive than iron oxides. This is often due to their composition, which typically helps to provide more choices for coloring. For example, titanium oxide is a bright white while chromium oxide is a green. There are also blues, reds, and purples available in comparison to only the earth tones available in the first group.

Synthetic pigments, the third main group, are the most expensive. They do provide you with the largest selection of colors, which contributes to their higher cost. These pigments are typically stronger so they do not require as much to achieve desired results in an application. The color palette is large and includes vibrant colors such as bright purple and yellow along with nearly any other color you could think of.

Packaged in dissolving bags or cans, powdered pigments will be fine or granular form. The granulated types are generally used in cement trucks because the prolonged, hard mixing disintegrates the granules. Fine powder pigments are ideal for small mixers such as those that are used for household projects.

Liquid pigments are solid pieces of pigments that are suspended in a special liquid that gives you time to measure out what you need before it begins to settle. While it is still in the container, it should be mixed frequently to prevent settling as well. Make sure that you determine if it is already diluted or in concentrated form before you begin measuring.

There are some pigments that provide extra protection for concentrated surfaces. Particularly with synthetic and liquid versions, it is possible to have pigments that provide some water resilience or other type of extra protective measures. Surfaces that can be polished are often great application instances for these types. They can also be ideal choices for concreted surfaces that are stamped.
