Discovering Feminist Workshops, Camps And Related Events

By Donna Kennedy

When it comes to feminism, some consider it a theory, others a practice. When it comes feminist workshops, it is often feminist practitioners whom lead and attend these events. Whether held at a conference, convention, festival or rally, there are often a number of different topics covered in multiple workshops over the course of a day, a weekend, or a week. In other cases, there can be annual events, such as those related to feminist theory which are held at a number of different colleges and universities.

In some cases, conferences, conventions, festivals and rallies also highlight issues related to women. One of the most common those doing so are LGBTQ+ pride parade rallies. Whereas, recent marches and rallies for equal rights always host a number of feminist speakers and workshops.

There are also companies and individuals which provide workshops in this area. Two of these companies are often much better known than others. These include, Ambivalently Yours and Soapbox. For, these companies can provide workshops on-site, or will travel to other locations. Most often, workshops in this area focus on a number of different issues related to women and civil rights, women and equal rights, sexual harassment, equal pay for equal work and working with women whom have experienced rape or domestic violence.

Beyond workshops, there are also other events such as weekend camps which allow women an opportunity learn about feminist issues. In addition, as these events are often more relaxed, women also tend to learn more about oneself and other women while in attendance. As with most events of this nature, there are often a number of different learning opportunities.

It should be noted that camps are very different from other events. For, individuals can often converse about a number of different ideologies and interests. As this is the case, there are women of all backgrounds, lifestyles, political persuasions and sexual orientations. As such, it is important that those attending these events maintain an open mind.

Most all of these events teach about the history of the feminist and women's liberation movement of the 1960s. As such, those in attendance often get a great deal of insight as to how far women have come in the last century. While this is the case, the world is at a point where women and others are once again fighting for civil and equal rights.

In most cases, those attending camps will hear talks by a popular, well known and respected woman offering a keynote address. While this is also the case at a number of conferences, conventions, festivals and rallies, those at camps are often more laid back. As such, individuals often share stories with one another afterward over a campfire or take walks and talk about issues under a starry sky.

Whether attending a local one day workshop, a weekend conference, a convention or rally, connections made at these events can often last a lifetime. While this is the case, it is also important to share information learned in the process with others whom might never be able to attend such an event. In the process, a woman may very well help inspire and motivate others to work towards life that is equal and free of discrimination, harassment or abuse.
