The Traits Needed For Emotional Intelligence Leadership Development

By Martha Robinson

Leaders have a very distinct personality in a sense that they know exactly what to do and exactly what to say their people. This is not because they are extremely smart or extremely talented, but simply because they have a high EQ or emotional intelligence. If one would want to become a leader, then he has to work on certain skills that will hone his emotional intelligence leadership development and bring him closer to his goal.

One of the traits that a leader has would be self awareness or control over oneself. The first step to becoming a leader is to first be aware of what one is capable of and what one is not capable of from a very logical or objective standpoint. From that very objective standpoint, one will be able to determine exactly what must be done for his own improvement and improvement of the team.

Because of his ability to control himself and know himself exactly, he will also have the ability to reflect on himself as well. With this self reflecting trait, he will be able to always improve on himself and continue growing even without the help of the environment. One with a strong self reflecting trait has the able to motivate himself. It is only when one can motivate himself to move that he can motivate other people too.

Having a high EQ also means having a very high level of empathy for others. Empathy is very important because one will be working with a team under him. If one has a high level of empathy, he will be able to completely understand the needs and wants of his followers, prompting him to provide whatever they need for their own personal growth and their work toward the common goal.

Social skills are also extremely important if one is to be a leader. In order to be a leader, one has to know how to deal with so many different people all with very different personalities and quirks. With that, one has to know how to handle them accordingly in order to lead his team to success.

Now, decision making is also something that takes a very high EQ to do. While most people think that IQ drives proper decision making, it is actually EQ that can lead to to more sound decisions that are especially made during tight situations. So if a leader does not know how to make decisions, then the whole project he is leading will not go well.

Finally, one has to learn conflict management when dealing with his people. While it is a part of social skills, conflict management is very different in a sense that it is about resolution of heated parties. For conflict management, one will need both empathy and decision making prowess.

For those who want to become leaders, developing a high EQ is very essential. Unlike IQ, EQ can actually be attained through a certain learning process. This means that leaders are not actually born but made through lessons, experiences, and bone crushing situations.
