Christians are certainly familiar with the words faith and worship. However, not all of those who consider themselves Christians give thought to what these words really mean. Some may not even understand them.
Belief in God is, of course, key to establishing a relationship with Him. Fortunately for those of us who are asked to believe in something unseen, God has given us a need for Him that leads us to seek Him and to respond to Him when He answers us. The Bible tells us that the creator is knowable through the creation, which reveals the nature of God. Think of the beauty, the diversity, and the perfect provision for our needs that is found even in this fallen world.
There is no way that Noah would have spent one hundred years building a huge boat in a time when rain was unknown unless he was convinced that God had asked him to do so. Abraham would not have left all he knew behind unless he was sure that God would be near in the new land. The boy David would not have challenged lions and bears unless he knew that God was with him. Their belief was evidenced by their actions.
Obedient dedication carried men and women of God through lion's dens, fiery furnaces, martyrdom, imprisonment, and more. Is it possible to have such strong conviction today? Of course it is. Remember that faith is not something we are born with or something we can achieve by trying harder. It is a gift from God. If you need more, exercise what you have and ask for more.
When a mere human knows that the creator of the universe (daily shown to be more and more vast) desires to freely give love, forgiveness, and provision, worship should be a natural result. However, many people take all their blessings for granted, and even people who really do love the Lord can be distracted by the world. That is why the Lord commands us to worship Him. He knows that a close relationship with Him is the best thing we can have now as well as during the rest of eternity.
Communicating the joy that our relationship gives us is vital to influencing others. It is also something that God requires of us. Over and over in His word, He asks us to praise Him. Praise is the natural result of our gratitude for all he has done for us, even though we are undeserving of His love because of sin and disobedience. We love Him because He first loved us. Missionary training should reflect these truths.
Faith and worship truly go together. If we have one, we will give the other. As we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we enter into communication with God. Learn more about Him and feel your belief in Him grow.
