Information Regarding LED Light Panels

By Brandi Little

LED light panels are a revolutionary technological development that has greatly changed the way display systems work. These panels are made up of numerous diodes that emit light to display video images. The numerous advantages associated with these lighting systems have resulted in their increased popularity in many fields. They are used in billboards for advertisements, for general illumination, in store signs and for stage lighting among other uses.

A typical panel is about 8 mm thick but the other dimensions are variable. The largest dimensions are 48 by 105 inches. Whenever there is a need to create a larger display system than this, the smaller panels are placed side by side and connected. Designs can also be customized in other ways to meet specific customer preferences. These may include changing the shapes, redesigning into letters, logos, cut-outs and so on.

The plate is impurities embedded in a semiconducting material. These impurities help in the creation of a p-n junction. They facilitate the flow of electric current from the anode (the p end) to the cathode (the n end). This flow is facilitated by charge carries (the electrons and the holes) and as this happens, the diodes light up.

The panels come in two main designs. These are the conventional type and the SMD type. The conventional type uses discrete LED displays. The diodes used are made of three clusters of colors: red, blue and green. When lit together they produce the full spectrum of color pixels. The SMD (surface mounted diode) also has the tri-colored diodes which are mounted on a solid surface. Systems made of a single color and two colors also exist.

The panels can be installed in four different ways depending on the intended use. The main types are the recessed, built in, suspended and the wall mounted types. Wall mounting is done for displays that measure less than 10 sqm. This method can be used both indoors and outdoors. The suspended type involves the use of a cable fixed to a ceiling. Recessed designs are principally meant for lighting purposes and so are the built in installations. The latter are usually used as a replacement for ceiling tile frames.

The design of panel will depend on whether will be used for indoor or outdoor lighting. The main consideration taken into account is the difference in ambient brightness. Most indoor designs are built based on the SMD technology. Outdoor designs, in contrast, predominantly use the conventional LEDs. For the indoor displays, a minimum of 600 candelas/square meter is necessary. Outdoor systems require much more than this.

There is a huge advantage as far as energy utilization is concerned. The displays are very energy efficient and achieve maximum brightness at a voltage of about 12 volts. They are long lasting with an average life of about 70,000 hours. There are several disadvantages including the fact that the efficiency is reduced as the current increases. The displays also require a huge investment initially, are very sensitive to voltage and their performance is temperature dependent.

There are many improvements that have been made to LED light panels since their first use. They have provided a source of lighting that is cool to touch, self-contained, portable with no cables. The users can be able to get infinitely dimmable tungsten output by simply adjusting a knob. Being extremely energy efficient, they can use a wide range of power sources including snap-on batteries, camera batteries, AC adaptors, cigarette lighter adaptors and even the AA batteries.
